This morning’s Denver Post featured a story about Aleon DeVore, an 88 year old woman in hospice, who completed and mailed off her ballot for this election (http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_10788526). She may not live to see the future, but she is concerned about it and wanted to do her part to contribute to what she hopes will be a better one. Her statement struck a deep chord for me: casting her ballot “says I threw more good rocks into the pond than I threw bad and care about the world even though I’m on my way out the door.” Wow! What stood out for me was Ms. DeVore’s focus on the pond- the world, the community, all of us. I don’t have to wait until I’m 88 to understand that the world doesn’t exist for my benefit alone. When I stand at the edge of the pond throwing rocks, I can raise the level of the water for all of us or I can throw wild and bean somebody else in the head. Today, I’ll go for the good rocks and a thoughtful aim.
